NF delivers slightly coarser filtration than RO, with the ability to remove particles as small as 0.002 to 0.005 μm in diameter. NF is a relatively recent technology that was developed mainly for potable water generation. NF removes harmful contaminants, such as pesticide compounds and organic macromolecules, while retaining higher levels of minerals that RO would otherwise remove. Today's RO systems retain traces of minerals to ensure water tastes well and is safe to consume. Nano-filtration membranes are capable of removing larger divalent ions such as calcium sulfate while allowing smaller monovalent ions such as sodium chloride to pass through.
Difference between nanofiltration and reverse osmosis?
While nanofiltration and reverse osmosis systems have similar designs and operation uses, there are some notable differences between the two. The primary distinction is that nanofiltration is not as rigid as reverse osmosis. It functions with less feed water pressure and is incapable of removing single charge ions from the water as definitely as reverse osmosis membranes.
While up to 99% of chlorides and sodium are removed by reverse osmosis systems, nanofiltration membranes typically remove only 50% to 80%. This percentage relies on the type of material and manufacturing of the membrane. However, due to its effectiveness in removing multiple charge ions, nanofiltration is the preferred choice for removing hardness from water while not affecting the total dissolved solids content than would reverse osmosis.
Does nanofiltration remove chlorine?
NF can reduce or remove TDS, hardness, color, agricultural chemicals, high molecular-weight, fulvic materials (which can form trihalomethanes when chlorinated). NF is also used to remove both organics and inorganics from different wastewaters.
